Live audience and television viewers alike were moved to tears by Tim Poe’s performance of Garth Brooks’ “If Tomorrow Never Comes” on America’s Got Talent Monday night. The lyrics of the song seemed especially meaningful considering the singer’s difficulty in even introducing himself due to a severe stutter he explained was the result of an injury suffered shielding fellow servicemen from a grenade while serving in Afghanistan in 2009. A truly talented singer, who said he only discovered his ability during speech therapy after his injury, he was sent on to the next round in Las Vegas by the judges who were clearly touched by his story and performance.Today’s breaking news reports that Poe and his story may be a sham. Military records report that although he did serve in the National Guard and spend a month in Afghanistan, there is no record of his injury nor has he received a purple heart. The New York Post interviewed his ex-wife and she not only denied him ever being injured or having a stutter, she claims that he once was the lead singer in a band called “Crawlspace”, making his whole story all the more shady.
It remains to be seen what further evidence will be unearthed, and whether Poe will speak up in defense of his claims. If it turns out that his whole story was make-believe, it will surely be difficult for America to forgive him and likely the end of a promising career.
